Case Study #5 - Continental African female

  • Illegally smuggled into the U.S. in 2001 when she was 43 by immigrant African trafficker
  • Forced to raise the 2 children of an African pharmacist, did the household jobs and light shopping. Captor paid her $100.00/month and made sure she spent the whole money on personal effects immediately
  • She was not allowed to keep any money
  • Kept in isolation from the public except to the close friends of the Madame and the trafficker
  • The Madame seized her personal documents.
  • Verbally and emotionally abused.
  • Not allowed to use the telephone
  • Threatened with deportation if her job was not satisfactory. Threatened with death if she ever runs away.
  • Local police who intervened before she left the Madame’s household was unable to retrieve her personal belongings.
  • The police was gracious enough to link her with an individual who assisted her with $25.00 and took her to a Catholic church
  • Reverend Father of the church took her to a shelter
  • Shelter allowed her temporary accommodation for 3 days. From the shelter she attempted to reach her captor on the phone but no answer. She went to the house but lock was changed. Someone at the shelter assisted her get to a big city and searched 411 (information) for relatives in New York City. Got the relative who paid her Amtrak ticket to New York
  • She is currently staying with the relative

Remarks: Victim reportedly has a bachelor degree in African university, and is an adult.
